WOW - Another amazing visitor at Kanantik!

Jaguar Visits Kanantik!
While some resorts claim to be located in a pristine, natural environment, Kanantik truly proves it once again! During the evening, a Jaguar walked along the southern edge of Kanantik, and then directly along our beach, in front of our cabanas! These beautiful and elusive animals are very endangered, and we are lucky to have them in our area.
We are very lucky to be located in this area, and we are very fortunate to have these amazing visitors.

River Otter Pays a visit to Kanantik

A very rare sighting at Kanantik yesterday!! A River Otter (real name: Tropical Otter) was seen walking along the beach at Kanantik Reef & Jungle Resort. These endangered animals are very rarely seen now, and yesterday's visit was a wonderful surprise.
We think it may have traveled along the creek that runs from the jungle to the sea, and it walked along our beach. These River Otters are small mammals that live in fresh water, and eat mostly fish. This is a beautiful creature, and it was a very special treat to have seen one.

New Visitor at Kanantik

We have had a surprise visitor lately at Kanantik Reef & Jungle Resort - a Baird's Tapir. These animals are not usually found near Kanantik because of our proximity to the ocean, however since we are surrounded by a lot of water, they have been visiting us! The Baird's Tapir is the national animal of Belize. Can you guess the national bird of Belize that can also be seen at Kanantik? If you guessed Toucan, you are correct!
The Baird's Tapir is also known as a 'mountain cow'. The image above may be misleading as to its size - these animals can grow to 800 pounds! Not bad for an animal that forages on leaves and fallen fruit.
We first saw footprints of the Tapir two weeks ago, near our access road, by our kitchen, and by the beachside near the cabanas. So, if you wake up one morning, step out of your cabana onto your wraparound deck, and see our friendly Tapir, don't be alarmed. Just realize that you are lucky to have seen Belize's national animal.

Agoutis at Kanantik

A Hungry Agouti visiting Kanantik

Kanantik has lots of visitors - even very small ones! Agoutis are small rodents, related to guinea pigs. They live in a small family, and their lifespan is up to 20 years! The mother and father Agouti are mates for life.
These vegetarian animals eat fruits that drop from nearby trees. They particularly enjoy the local coconuts, as their strong canine teeth are able to make a hole in the cask allowing them to drink the water and eat the pulp.
Our friendly local Agouti, which tend to be quite shy, are now used to our guests at the resort, and often pose for photos - like this one! Agoutis are but one of the many species of wildlife guests can witness firsthand at Kanantik Reef & Jungle Resort.
